Baptism & Membership: Discerning A Way Forward

The National Faith & Life Team (NFLT) hosted a national summit of provincial Faith & Life Teams to engage in the process of reviewing the MB Confession Of faith, specifically article 8: Baptism & Membership.  Leaders met in Winnipeg May 2 - 4 to enter into community hermeneutics through the study of the Scriptures, reflecting on historical and cultural paradigms, and seeking the wisdom of the Holy Spirit.  There was a tangible unity of the Spirit as leaders discerned how Article 8, its commentary and pastoral application, can be revised.  In broad strokes, there was agreement that the language around Article 8 needs profound clarity around issues of baptism and membership. What does it mean to belong in covenant relationship with the Body of Christ?  Baptism is in a sense initiation, not graduation. The church must take seriously both pre and post discipling of every baptismal candidate.  There was also strong affirmation to keep baptism and membership in the Body of Christ together.  The problem is how one interprets ‘membership’, often poorly and negatively.  John Neufeld, lead pastor of the Meeting Place (Winnipeg), told the story of how his congregation once practiced separation of baptism and membership and has now brought them together under the banner of covenantal community.

The NFLT will now move to appoint writers to craft a revised Article 8, commentary and pastoral application.  This revision will be thoroughly vetted in a number of settings before being presented to the national MB family for adoption.
