My Longing For Space

“Be still and know that I am God.”  Psalm 46:10

I am at a place in my life where I long for space to simply pause, be quiet and listen for the still sweet whisper of my Heavenly Father. I am weary of the rush, the hurry and all the anxiety and worry they sow in my spirit. I gaze upon the landscape of my future and wonder if I should better heed the counsel of American philosopher and poet Henry David Thoreau who said, “Live deliberately.” For me, such living entails less haste and more space.

This September, my wife Janine and I spend two weeks on the shores of Lake Okanagan. It was a breath-taking setting of God’s creation. It was also a moment of quiet space for reflecting upon matters of the heart. We spend time pondering our relationship, our hopes, our present life and future plans. We welcomed the depth of our conversations, the flow of tears and release of bottled-up feelings. Serendipitous was our profound inner longing to linger in this space. In all honesty, we voiced to each other a profound need for such soul margin beyond the limitations of our finite work respite.

The discipled life needs space – regular times of unhurried contemplation and discernment – to be both healthy and fruitful. Consider the pertinent counsel of L.B. Cowman: “We would be better Christians if we spent more time alone, and we would actually accomplish more if we attempted less and spent more time in isolation and quiet waiting on God.”

Friends, may these words awaken something deep within you; that aspiration (using the words of Robert Frost) to choose the road less travelled by. A path of deliberate, measured, yet purposeful slowness taking one to spaces of soul serenity where the conversations that truly matter unfold.  May the Spirit give you wisdom and courage in your considerations of these thoughts.

Soul Serenity*

Solitude is the soul’s oasis,

the sanctuary of God’s good graces.

Deserted niches buoy the depleted spirit,

the weary heart – so deeply cheers it.

The alone spaces birth serenity,

places to remember identity.

These tranquil spots offer repose,

lulls in time for one to compose.

Whispers of God can now be heard,

bringing to one a needed word.

Clarity of thought, clarity of heart,

refreshed, renewed, poised to restart.
