Light In A Dark World

In the last decade, there has been huge growth in the independent, club basketball scene in Saskatchewan.  Most teams are designed for high school teams to play outside of the normal season, for access to provincial teams or for the pursuit of post-secondary scholarships.

In the midst of this, there was a desire to create an alternative.  Tony Martens of Dalmeny and Donna Crockett of Hepburn have teamed up to create a new club basketball team for boys 15-17 years of age.  Based out of Dalmeny, the purpose of Knights Basketball is the “development of boys in a fun, competitive basketball environment.”  This purpose is not just an ideal, but a calling of God for Tony through 19 years of coaching to help young boys become men.  As a parent, coach and administrator, Donna also sees basketball as more than just a sport to be played or a game to be won.

What is meant by the development of boys?  It is leadership by mentoring a leadership style that asks and models instead of telling and yelling.  It is discipline by focusing negative energy into positive play.  It is ownership of mistakes and making things right.  Perseverance by seeking solutions during struggles instead of shutting down or lashing out. Sacrifice by giving of self for the good of the team.  It is perspective by recognizing that basketball is only one aspect of life and treating each player as a unique individual.

The program has been developed around these principles, while integrating unique elements which will provide more ownership to the players on the floor.

How can we be a light in a dark world?  By being a Knight.  By creating Knights.  -  By being a Knight.
