Church Planting Sunday at The Compass

The Compass Church (Regina) celebrated church planting on Sunday April 8th at the Ecole Harbour Landing Elementary School. The school will serve as the home for The Compass’ 2nd plant reaching out to a new City of Regina community of some 14,000 residents. There is no other church in Harbour Landing. Cam & Sam Abbot will lead a core team whose purpose is to make the name of Jesus known. The Harbour Landing missional community will begin regular services this fall.

The service started with prayer for all those impacted by the Humboldt Broncos tragedy just two days prior. Pastor Blair Allen also dedicated all the giving that morning to Humboldt churches ministering to the family, friends and fans of the young hockey players.

Ron Leonard, C2C Regional Director provide some context for the church planting needs in Saskatchewan stating that 2.8% of Regina’s 240,000 citizens are declared Christians which amounts to about 6720. He reminded listeners that the church exists for people who do not yet belong to Jesus. Leonard encouraged everyone to have a good news story of Jesus they can share with someone who does not yet know the Lord.

Dwight Bernier, Acts 29 Network Canada Director, spoke boldly about the fact that all Christians have a role to play in church planting because we are followers of Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit and blessed with great resources of time, talent and treasure.  “All of God’s people are to be on mission for God,” stated Bernier.

Phil Gunther, SKMB Director of Ministry, ended the service by praying over the Abbots and their core team.  Gunther stated, “Like Joshua leading his people into the Promised Land, Cam & Sam, you are leading your people in Harbour Landing to be a blessing to the people.”  Gunther gave them Joshua 1:9 as an encouragement: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you…”
