"Supporting SKMB Churches and Camps in making disciples."

2019: Our Greatest Need

As we embark on another year of ministry within the SKMB our culture and its social media machinery clamours on about the need for people to start the New Year by losing weight, exercising, eating healthy food, making money, saving for retirement, taking more vacations and seeking time for yourself. Inherently, these are neither good nor bad.

However, I was recently reminded that as followers of Christ Jesus, our greatest need is not named on our culture’s list of needs for 2019. The Apostle Paul intimates that our greatest need is to be ever more like Jesus, our King, Lord and Savior (2 Corinthians 3:18). There is nothing that tops this priority in the life of a disciple of Jesus. We must be more like the divine rabbi we serve. Isn’t that what a “Christian” is to be, “a little Christ”?

Imagine the impact the present day church in Canada would have if all followers of Jesus were daily becoming more and more like Him in our thoughts, attitudes, words and actions! Our nation would be turned upside down! Think about the influence we would have if we loved people like Jesus did? Cared about the poor like Jesus did? Comforted the broken- hearted like Jesus did? Placed the needs of others ahead of our own like Jesus did? Living sacrificially like Jesus did? Pointed the lost to the good news of the kingdom as Jesus did? Imagine the impact on our own lives if every morning we woke up and committed ourselves to be more like Jesus. I believe our lives would be completely transformed.

The kind of transformation to Christlikeness that Paul wrote about to the church in Corinth comes about not by self-effort or self-improvement, but by allowing God’s Holy Spirit to do a supernatural work in us. Christlikeness is a work of the Spirit of God in us as we soak in God’s Word, pray and serve. And, because it is an on-going spiritual miracle of renewal, we can truly, as

the ancient psalmist once counselled, cease striving. Our role is one of surrender – let go and let God.

As you enter into the adventures of 2019, lose weight, exercise, maintain a healthy diet, be nicer to your pets and so on, but make sure that you are daily allowing the Holy Spirit to address your greatest need, that of being more and more like Jesus.
