Over 300,000 allied soldiers were pushed up against the Northern Sea by the German forces on the northern beaches of France and one of the major navy powers of the day, the Royal Navy, wasn’t sure if they would be able to rescue them. There were several challenges that prevented the urgent evacuation of these troops and every hour of standstill that went by the reality of these troops being captured or killed by the advancing German troops became more and more of a possibility. It was in this anxious moment that Winston Churchill came up with an idea.
On May 20th, the Admiralty began to move forward with a plan for rescuing these troops and the shocking details of this great rescue was that the Royal Navy wasn't the hero. In fact, the Admiralty focused on recruiting smaller boats from ordinary British citizens to work with the navy to see these troops rescued from the beaches of France. In total, 850 personal boats crossed the northern sea to rescue these troops.
This rescue mission was called Operation Dynamo and is better known today as Dunkirk. What made this mission so successful was that there were three clear realities that everyone accepted.
A Clear Mission. These private boats were not out for a fun day on the water but knew they had a purpose, save the troops from Dunkirk.
Better Together. These British citizens and Navy leaders knew that in order to see this mission become successful, they needed each other. The Navy ships needed the pleasure crafts, and the pleasure crafts needed the tugboats, and so on. They knew they were better together.
Risk. This mission these everyday British citizens volunteered for involved risk. Nothing about this mission was safe or easy. The risk of death, loss of their boats and the trauma of war was very real. Those who went to rescue the troops embraced this risk.
Our Gospel Mission
The gospel mission we are called to is one that no single church can accomplish on its own. The reality is, we need one another. I am completely convinced that if we were to see the mission of Jesus move forward in Saskatchewan, we first must come to a place where we realize that our church, in fact no one church, can accomplish this mission on its own. The reality is, we need one another. Our rural churches need our urban churches, and our urban churches need our rural churches. We, like the British Admiralty, need the humility to ask other SKMB churches for help and we need the humility to learn from one another.
As the SKMB community we have a common foundation of mission in our Confession of Faith and, I believe, that if we want to embrace this realty of working together for this mission, we need embrace these three clear realities. We need to embrace a clear mission, a belief that we are better together, and we can do far more together than apart, and finally, we must be will to move towards risk.
Leadership Forum 2025
This year we are excited to welcome Pastors Matt Shantz and Eldon Fehr from Central Community church in Chilliwack B.C. to help us think through and develop this foundation for working together for the sake of Jesus mission in Saskatchewan. Central Community Church’s story is a story of God’s grace as they have embraced and continued to live out a clear mission, a posture of working together, and a willingness to embrace risk.
This event isn't just for pastors but is designed to encourage and equip lay leaders as the look to be inspired and prepared to lead in the local church. We would love for you to join us on Nov. 22nd and work to bring a group of leaders from your church!
We would love for you and your team join us on November 22nd at Parliament Community Church in Regina. The cost is $30 per person, and this covers food and the event. Online registration will begin October 15th.
