Leaders Collective – A Mentor’s Perspective

When my Pastor reached out and asked if I would be a mentor with the Leadership Collective Program, I was immediately curious. Growing up in the church, I was blessed to have several adults take the time to really listen to me as I worked through my faith. Hearing different perspectives, stories of God working in other people’s lives, and praying together helped me build my own relationship with God. I wondered if this was the right time for me to offer a little of that back to someone else.

The more I learned about the program through conversations and training materials, the more interested I was. I didn’t need to have all the answers, just meet with a young adult regularly over the 6-month program, get to know her by asking questions and listening to her journey.

Really, I think I got more out of the program than I put in. We hit it off right away. We had a lot in common, but I also was exposed to new music, new books and number of lessons on the ways of social media lol Getting to know each other really opened the way to real conversations about the challenges of life and how we see God working through them.

We both had a lot going on in our lives during the duration of the program. Each time we met, whether life had been challenging or smooth, we were eager to connect and share what we saw God doing. I enjoyed feeling free to ask questions and dig deeper as I got to know this young lady. It was an honour to have a front row seat to watch God move in her life.

God certainly used Leadership Collective in the development of my faith. I found that God was often teaching me similar things that he was teaching this young woman. I looked forward to our time together. I also began taking some time after our meetings to sit with God to hear what he had for me and to spend time in prayer for my mentee. Not only did I see God moving in her life, but in mine as well. It reinvigorated parts of my faith that I had not focused on for many years. I felt like I was coming back into part of myself that I’d forgotten. That journey continues to this day. Leaders Collective made a difference to the participant’s life, but as a mentor, it also made an impact on my faith journey.

Your Learning Journey

Never Stop…

I went back to school at 66.  I was tied for the oldest student in the program.  I went back, not because I needed more letters behind my name. But because something inside me whispered, You’re not done yet.
